A historic season for the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team came to a close Wednesday as Morton defeated the 19th-ranked Chargers 1-0 in the semifinals of the Region IV Division II tournament at Galesburg High School's Van Dyke Field.

The defeat was the first this season for the second-seeded Chargers (5-1-1), who were playing in the region semifinals for just the second time ever and whose appearance in this week’s national rankings marked a first in program history.

Third-seeded Morton (8-2) won its eighth in a row to advance to Saturday’s championship against No. 1 seed Prairie State.

The Panthers scored the game’s lone goal in the 35th minute. Rafael Silverio won a battle for a loose ball near the right side of the box and made a centering pass to Baltazar Duran, whose shot slid under the arm of Chargers keeper Iker Sanchez (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle).

Sandburg’s best scoring chance came just a minute after the Panthers’ goal as Roldy Geneus (Orlando, Fla./Evans) put a header off the crossbar following a corner kick by Guylberson Camille (Key West, Fla./Key West).

Following a free kick in the 89th minute, Geneus had a shot from 25 yards out stopped by the Panthers’ keeper, and Camille’s header off the rebound also was turned aside. Sandburg was just shy of even with Morton in shot attempts (15-14), but the Chargers were able to put only three on goal.

Sanchez stopped seven of Morton’s eight shots on goal.
